A shocking story about the killing of illegal immigrants from Ethiopia trying to cross into Saudi Arabia via Yemen
From here (h/t Tim)
“DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Border guards in Saudi Arabia have fired machine guns and launched mortars at Ethiopians trying to cross into the kingdom from Yemen, likely killing hundreds of the unarmed migrants in recent years, Human Rights Watch said in a report released Monday.”
Pretty extreme, I wonder if it will prove an effective deterrent or lead to alternative methods for entering the Kingdom. One can only imagine the desperation of those fleeing the ongoing civil war in Ethiopia only to be met with a hail of bullets at the border between Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
As a reminder, WHO Director General, Tedros Ghebreyesus is from Ethiopia.

Saudi Arabia: Mass Killings of Migrants at Yemen Border | Human Rights Watch (hrw.org)
“Saudi border guards have killed at least hundreds of Ethiopian migrants and asylum seekers who tried to cross the Yemen-Saudi border between March 2022 and June 2023.
Saudi officials are killing hundreds of women and children out of view of the rest of the world while they spend billions on sports-washing to try to improve their image.
Saudi Arabia should immediately and urgently revoke any policy to use lethal force on migrants and asylum seekers. Concerned countries should press for accountability and the UN should investigate.

“Between March 2022 and June 2023, Saudi border guards killed hundreds of Ethiopian migrants attempting to cross the border from Yemen into the oil-rich kingdom, according to a new Human Rights Watch report released on Monday. The report comes as Saudi Arabia implements an anti-migrant policy at home and a campaign to boost its image abroad.”
Here’s a map of the region:
From here:
“It is estimated that approximately 750,000 Ethiopians live and work in Saudi Arabia. While many migrate for economic reasons, a number have fled because of serious human rights abuses by their government, including during the recent, brutal armed conflict in northern Ethiopia.
Ethiopian migrants have for decades attempted the dangerous migration route – known as the “Eastern Route” or sometimes the “Yemeni Route” – from the Horn of Africa, across the Gulf of Aden, through Yemen and into Saudi Arabia. It is estimated that well over 90 percent of the migrants on this route are Ethiopian. “

I agree. But we’re at the end of the road, somethings got to give.
I don't assume that i can enter any country without proper paper work and the right to be there. I think each country can protect their country's border the same way any person protects their home. It is their right, if you don't want to be killed follow the rule of law for what ever country you are in or trying to go to. If more people believed this and if more parents taught their children this way there would be much less illegal "anything".
