I had the same issue with roughly the same background and circumstances (25 years with HSBC). I had to sort out W8BEN and FATCA regulations with the US.
Politically Exposed Person = PEP = EU laws – not UK laws = extra compliance costs.
Money Laundering rules have always been tough as is Know Your Client (KYC) and anti-terrorist laws.
Farage was accused of receiving Russian money- Sir Chris Bryant simply made the claim in Parliament and “bam” Farage is now a non-person -with no rights to a bank account.
There are new laws that probably now extend to “hate speech” = anti-“climate crisis” and anti-“WHO”???
Life seems to be becoming unliveable for Mr Farage in the UK. I wonder if HSBC paid him out in cash – I think the “authorities” take a dim view of wandering around with suitcases of the stuff these days.

I have had the same experience with the Heritage Bank in Adelaide South Australia. I applied to open an account and was informed this was rejected because my identity could not be verified. This was justified by demanding a ten didget number imprinted on my NT Driver;s licence. No such number exists. I have a top credit rating and spotless bank accounts since 1971. I am wondering how widespread is this discrimination.
