2022 was a horrible year for investments – here’s some numbers from a UK website for the top and bottom 10 of pooled investment vehicles – basically, Tech rebound good, China crash bad

Last year I posted this:

Massive losses on US investments across the board.

2023 saw a large bounce with the S&P500 up 25% (which means a zero return over 2022 and 2023 combined) and

Ten year US Government bond yields started at around 3.5%, rocketed up to over 5% in October 2023, before enjoying a massive rally back down to close the year at around 3.5%. Back to where they started (they have since sold off to over 4%) .

All in all, a pretty good year for 401k plans, at least taking them back to where they were at the end of 2021.

So, returns up to 11 December 2023 (UK date convention) – so pretty sloppy to claim its 2023 calendar year, anyway, here’s the top and bottom 10.

You can add around 7% to these sterling (GBP) returns to reflect sterling strength against the US dollar over 2023.

Out of interest, AAPL is up around 50%, MSFT up aeound 70% and AMZB up around 75% - so you are entitled to sneer a little at these returns! Nonethelexs it is pretty impressive stuff.
