Afghanistan conflict: Kabul falls to Taliban as president flees - BBC News
“US President Joe Biden has defended the withdrawal of American troops, saying he could not justify an "endless American presence in the middle of another country's civil conflict".
More than 60 countries, including the US and the UK, have issued a joint statement saying the Afghan people "deserve to live in safety, security and dignity", and that security and civil order should be immediately restored.”
The humiliation of the defeat did not end there as the US was forced to give up almost all its military equipment in order to escape.
Afghanistan: What was left behind by US forces? - BBC News
“A total of 73 aircraft, nearly 100 vehicles and other equipment were abandoned by US troops as they pulled out ahead of the 31 August deadline.
But US Central Command head Gen Kenneth McKenzie said it had all been rendered impossible to use.
"Those aircraft will never fly again," he said.
The aircraft abandoned in Kabul include:
MD-530 helicopters, used for reconnaissance and close attack
A-29 light attack planes
In June, the Afghan armed forces were using:
43 MD-530s, provided by the US
23 A-29s
I wonder why they didn’t fly the aircraft out and use them as cover for driving all the vehicles out to say, Pakistan. That’s where Bin Laden was hiding out, when they killed him, right?
“The US gave a total of $18.6 billion of equipment to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) from 2005 to August 2021, according to the report.
Of that total, equipment worth $7.12 billion remained in Afghanistan after the US withdrawal was completed on August 30, 2021. It included aircraft, air-to-ground munitions, military vehicles, weapons, communications equipment and other materials, according to the DoD report.”
No doubt the airwaves will be replete with stories of heroes and villains, tragedies and rescues.
