Comparison of England & Wales mortality with the US over the 3 calendar years of the C19 pandemic
Here are some tables comparing mortality characteristics over the 3 calendar years.
First, the crude mortality rates for England and Wales combined, compared to the death rate in the US (UK statisticians have a penchant for combining England and Wales).
UK Crude Mortality Rates (CMR) have declined from the peak year of 2020, but were still 6% above the average of 9.1 deaths per 100,000 for 2015-2019, with calendar year 2022 recording 9.6 deaths per 100,000. (There is only an “administrative estimate” for calendar year 2022.
US Death Rates have not subsided and remained 18% higher than the average of 8.6 deaths per 100,000 for 2015-2019, with calendar year 2022 recording 10.1 deaths per 100,000 – around 0.5 deaths per 100,000 compared to England&Wales.
It would be great if this data was available per country – maybe the largest ones like Japan, Germany and Brazil – getting data from India or China is not possible either because of complete lack of interest or politics.
Here’s a more detailed England & Wales centric table:
The sharp eyed amongst might notice the drop in population for England and for Wales in 2021 – I double checked and my eyes gave out with the squinting!
Here are the sources:
I have not cross referenced the US data to CDC data.
Onwards!

Thanks for this. Really shocked about the US. The Remdesovir must still be flowing like a river over there.
Wow Peter. One question that tangentially on topic: Why is it, do you think, the statisticians like to combine England and Wales? They’re two separate countries, right?
And why Wales? Why don’t they have a preference for combining England with Scotland?
