The magnitude of the land grab across the country can not be overstated. Specifically, vast amounts of public land (BLM/Forest Service are being proposed for leasing to private/subsidized wind plantations across the west. The adverse cumulative impacts of these actions are likely significant and irreversible. A 2007 DOI Wind Energy Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), required under the 1970 National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), is being dusted off and used as legal justification. Local environmental project assessments have been tiered off of this inadequate and dated EIS. If you recall, the NEPA legal framework is what brought the timber industry to it knees and ruined countless small rural communities, and has been used to halt border fence construction. Moreover, the USFWS has assumed authority to issue “takings” of Eagles, other birds of pray, and bats by wind turbines in a overreaching assault of the 1973 Endangered Species Act. Finally, I might add these so-called “takings” waivers are occurring with the blessing of most of the big national environmental organizations like the Audubon Society as on offering to the global climate gods.
