It's a moment of solidarity as well as a measure of distress. However, it is unlikely to make a difference. Comment from someone who knows far more than me:

'Now whilst having something to express our frustrations at the Labour government may be nice, ultimately the fact is it will not result in a general election being called.

Firstly Parliament can consider petitions but it is not bound by them and technically does not have to have a formal debate. Most likely the result will be an incredibly snotty response from the government talking down to everyone.

Secondly snap general elections can only be called at the whim of the current Prime Minister. Keir Starmer has absolutely no reason to call a general election outside of the regular five year cycle.

Thirdly current polling does not yet suggest that Labour would lose power. On the contrary they would likely cling on in that hypothetical scenario either as a minority administration or in coalition with the Lib Dems.

Now don't take any of this to invalidate being angry at the government. Indeed I would actually be encouraging anyone and everyone who feels strongly about removing Labour from office to do something productive;

Join a political party.'

"Your observation aligns well with Gustave Le Bon's theories on crowd psychology. In his book The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind, Le Bon discusses how leaders who initially meet the needs of their followers but later betray them can incite intense emotions and reactions from the crowd[1]. He describes how crowds can become impulsive, irritable, and capable of extreme actions when they feel betrayed[1].

This idea can indeed be paralleled with the behavior observed in the chimpanzee group, where the betrayal of the group's expectations by the alpha male led to violent retribution.
