Solar arrays anywhere North of North Carolina in the US are also pointless, but they are still being built - even in Canada. Here in NC they seem to be of marginal usefulness. I know of at least one solar farm locally that's gone belly up and is being dismantled.
It is just because I was born in a tropical country, or does anyone else finds it absurdly bizarre that someone would consider solar energy as the basis of a healthy electrical grid in the fucking British Islands?
This is a failed project before it even starts. 400 megawatts is 400 million watts and the average home in East Yorkshire uses 8 kilowatts a day (8000 watts). This means the solar array, at 100% peak electricity production could only provide power to 50,000 homes. That's half of the stories projected production. But the average annual sunlight in East Yorkshire would only provide 13% efficiency of the solar array. This means the array, on average, could only provide power for 6500 homes. Someone is getting a payoff for this project. The cost has to be in the area of, at a minimum, $300 to $400 million, and that estimate is probably low. This means some friend of the minister has a company that will get that purchase order - and pocket around $25 million in profit (if not more). I wonder how much money will be handed to the minister, in cash, under the table (or deposited in an offshore account)
a perfect example of why local government should be at the TOP of the hierarchy of governments. The national government should NOT be able to override local democracy. In the US, neither our State governments nor our national government should be able to override local democracy. But every country in the world has this hierarchy upside down and backwards. Every country gives its national government the right to screw over the locals. In the US, our federal government can tell the State and local governments what to do, and the State governments can tell the locals what to do. We will never have true democracy until we rectify this. Local democracy is the only true democracy.
Today is May 22, 2025. Where is Peter Halligan???? No articles since May 12.
Praying you are just on a well deserved break, Peter. All the best from Oregon.

Hmm, 400mW (0.4W) maybe true for North Yorkshire on a foggy day.

We live in difficult times. Seems these thugs are unstoppable. Seems too we can't destroy them before they destroy us!
Plus the transmission and conversion losses.

Subsidiary Principle needs to be at the fore.
